Sydney University Cricket Club (SUCC) first graders Dave Miller and James Crowley have played starring roles as the Australian Universities XI defeated Durham University by 7 wickets in Durham, England.

Batting all-rounder Dave Miller was named man of the match after scoring an unbeaten century (109), as Australian Universities racked up 4/321 before declaring after bowling out Durham University for just 226. Miller combined with wicketkeeper batsman James Crowley (36) for a match high 102 run fourth wicket stand.

Crowley took a catch and a stumping, while Miller contributed with the ball, taking a wicket in his sides second innings in the field.

Miller and Crowley – recent graduates of the University of Sydney and former SUSF Elite Athlete Program scholarship holders – were selected in the Cricket Australia endorsed Australian Universities side, which is selected from nine premier university cricket clubs around England. Each year the side plays a British first-class MCC University.

The first match played between an Australian Universities XI and a MCC University occurred in 2011 when the Aussies drew their two day match against Oxford Universities. Last year Australian Universities defeated Loughborough Marylebone Cricket Club by six wickets.

Miller and Crowley – currently playing cricket and working in the UK – will return to Australia in time to play with Sydney University in the Sydney Grade Cricket competition which begins in September.
