Sydney University American Football Club will be shooting for a 16th consecutive Waratah Bowl when they start the 2018 season with a match against the Kings at Slade Park on September 2.

The Lions, one of the foundation clubs in the Bowl competition, will also field a team in the Colts competition and, for the first time, a women’s team in the Gridiron NSW competition.

The Sydney University Cubs will meet the Giants in the Kookaburra Bowl season opener, while the women’s team, the Lions, will play NorthWestern Phoenix at Sir Joseph Banks Oval, with a 10am kick-off.

“The new women’s team will be built off the club’s core values of hard work, dedication and teamwork,” a SUAFC spokesman said. “We expect them to add another chapter to the SUAFC’s long history of success, paved by the Lions and Cubs teams of the past.

That success includes 15 consecutive Gridiron NSW Division One titles. The Lions defeated West Sydney Pirates 17-nil in the 2017 grand final, played at Leichhardt Oval, to claim their 15th Waratah Bowl.

Sydney Uni made the Waratah Bowl grand finals in 2000, 2001 and 2002 before their run started with a win over UWS Outlaws in the 2003 decider.

They’ve won every Waratah Bowl since, including the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 titles over West Sydney Pirates.
