Pole vaulter Stephanie Langridge began Sydney University’s quest for the overall pointscore title at the 2010 Australian University Games when she collected a silver medal on the opening day of competition yesterday in Perth.
Langridge jumped 3.54m to finish second behind
Sydney University finished third in the overall pointscore at the 2009 AUGs held in Melbourne, and a strong team has been sent to Perth to reclaim the No.1 spot.
With that in mind, Langrdige’s efforts started Sydney University’s quest on the right note.
The 2010 AUGs have attracted over 5000 students from 38 universities across Australia to Perth for six days of competition in 30 sports
While the pole vault was one of the few sports to be finalised on day one, it was a busy day for the many team sports, with round-robin competition getting under way in earnest.
Sydney University teams will be defending gold medals in women’s water polo, women’s softball and open baseball, along with the overall men’s rowing, overall women’s rowing and the overall University Rowing Championship for the NSW Centenary Cup.
