Sydney University secured a semi-final berth in the North East AFL competition with a 58-point win over Southport in the elimination final played at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday.

The Lions had 10 scorers, led by Damien Bonney with three and Jacob Derickx with two, in the 14-22 (106) to 6-12 (48) result.

Sydney University had plenty of solid performers in the big win, with Timothy Barton, Austin Lucy, Gabriel Orr, Sam Fong, Damien Bonney and Max Wilson among the best.

The Lions will meet Northern Territory Thunder in a semi-final at TIO Stadium, Darwin, this Saturday, with the winner earning a grand final berth against the winner of the other semi-final between UWS Giants and Aspley.

Meanwhile, in the Sydney men’s Premier League, St George Dragons ended Sydney University’s run in the 2015 Premier Division with a close-fought 63-59 win in their elimination final.

The Students had 19 shots at goal but only collected eight majors, while Saints landed nine majors from 18 shots to move through to the semi-finals.

Sydney University’s Division One side moved through to the semi-finals with a 71-56 win over Macquarie University at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday.

Nik Dale and Christopher Kendrick each score three goals in the impressive win. The Students will meet UTS Bats at Henson Park this Sunday, with Balmain Tigers and Pennant Hills Demons contesting the other semi-final.

UTS Bats bought Sydney University’s Division Three’s season to an end with a 71-43 win in their semi-final at Henson Park on Saturday.

The news was better from the Sydney University women’s Premier Division team, who earned a grand final berth with their 69-36 win over Newtown Breakaways in their major semi-final at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday.

Belinda Michalk kicked three goals and Ashlee Morgan and Meredith Gray two each in the strong win.

Sydney University will meet the winner of the final between Newtown and UNSW-Eastern Suburbs Stingrays.

The grand final will be played at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday from 1.30pm on Saturday, September 19.
