Sydney University Football Club this week farewelled three players in the 26-man Australian squad to compete at the IRB Junior (Under 20) World Championships in Argentina next month and congratulated three others who have been selected in the 30-man Wallaby squad for next month’s inbound Tests against Fiji, England and Ireland.
Second-rower Luke Jones, hooker Sam Roberson and winger Greg Jeloudev earned selection in the Australian Under 20 squad, while halfback Luke Burgess, five-eighth Berrick Barnes and second-rower Dean Mumm won berths in the Wallaby squad.
SUFC also has a tangible connection with uncapped prop Laurie Weeks who has also been selected in the Wallaby squad. Weeks anchored the University scrum to two Shute Shield premierships before relocating to Brisbane when he was signed up by the Queensland Reds in 2009. SUFC flanker and NSW Waratahs captain Phil Waugh missed out on selection in the Wallaby squad.
Queensland Reds backrower Jake Schatz will captain the Australian Under 20s at the World Championships in Argentina, where Australia kicks off their campaign with a pool match against Scotland in Santa Fe on Saturday, June 5, before matches against Tonga in Parana (June 9) and South Africa in Santa Fe (June 13).
Should Australia progress through their pool matches they will play a semi-final on June 17, with the final scheduled for June 21 at Estadio El Coloso del Parque in Rosario.
Jones, Roberson and Jeloudev are Sydney University Sports Scholarship holders. Jones, a 197cm second-rower, can also cover flanker and number eight. At 112kg, he will provide plenty of bulk in the Australian scrum.
He was an Australian Schoolboy representative in 2008 when they toured the UK and in 2009 when they toured Fiji and New Zealand. Jones played for Sydney University Colts while attending St Pius College at Chatswood. He was signed up by the Western Force franchise in 2010.
Roberson, a product of St Stanislaus College, Bathurst, was an Australian Schoolboy in 2008 and a member of the Junior Waratahs in 2009 and 2010,
He was a key member of Sydney University’s victorious 1st Colts team in 2008 and is studying for a Bachelor of Science at Sydney University.
Jeloudev, who covers wing and fullback, was also an Australian Schoolboy representative while at the King’s School in 2008 before enrolling in Animal and Veterinary Bioscience at Sydney University. He was a Junior Waratah in 2009. He won the GPS Open-Age 100m in 2007 and 2008.
While Sydney University will miss out on the services of Barnes, Burgess and Mumm in the Sydney grade Shute Shield competition, the club will welcome back Waugh and a host of Super 14 players in coming weeks as they bid to make a run up the competition ladder.
With just two wins from seven outings, the club will be pleased to see Waratahs Will Caldwell, Tom Carter, Dave Dennis, Daniel Halangahu, Pat McCutcheon and Jeremy Tilse, along with Ben McCalman, Nathan Charles, Mitch Inman and Jono Jenkins from the Western Force and Jerry Yanuyanutawa and possibly Julian Huxley from the ACT Brumbies.
And, of course, five-time premiership captain Tim Davidson is yet to step out at club level this season.
