Sydney University Flames’ old bogey, Canberra Capitals, were at it yet again at the Sport and Fitness Centre on Saturday when they won an overtime contest 87-83 – their second win over the Flames this season.

With the scores level at full-time the Capitals, playing their eighth game in four weeks, finished too strong to run out four-point winners and stay on top of the Women’s National Basketball League ladder with a 7-1 record for the season.

In a return to form, Carly Wilson top-scored for the winners with 19 points, while Michelle Cosier backed up her Friday night form with 18 points and Alison Lacey collected 17 for the game.

Amy Denson continued a solid season for the Flames, contributing a game-high 23 points, while Natalie Stafford finished with18 points and Natalie Porter 11 points to go with 11 boards.

While the Capitals finished on top, Sydney University made the early running, opening up a 12-point lead in the first quarter before Canberra trimmed it back to six by quarter time.

It was a similar story in the second term, with Sydney opening up another 12-point lead only to be reeled in to a six-point advantage at the main break.

The Capitals slowly took control in the third quarter and went into the final term with a one-point advantage.

As has become the case with the two arch rivals, an arm-wrestle ensued through the final term, with each side trading buckets until Denson levelled proceedings with 2min 33sec on the clock, sending the game into overtime.

However, it was the visitors who found more in the tank to run out four-point winners.

The fourth-placed Flames have two home games to right their season, starting with the Bulleen Boomers at SUSFC at 7pm on Saturday, November 6, and then West Coast from 7pm on Friday, November 12.
