The vast array of volunteer coaches who assist Sydney University sporting clubs and the 129 athletes who achieved green and gold status at the recent Australian University Games were honoured at a reception in the Grandstand last week.
While the coaches reception has long been an annual event, Sydney University Sport and Fitness this year decided to honour the AUG athletes in a combined function.
Athletes in attendance covered athletics, badminton, baseball, women’s basketball, fencing, rowing, rugby sevens, skiing, swimming, tennis, women’s volleyball and women’s water polo.
SUSF executive director Rob Smithies said the function allowed the University the chance to thank the many coaches who volunteer their time to Sydney University sport and to present Intervarsity colour awards to athletes who gained selection in honorary Australian University teams from the 2010 AUGs.
“It has been a great year for sport at Sydney University, “Mr Smithies said. “Although we only contested 26 sports at the AUGs in Perth, we won 13 team gold and six team silver medals to finish third.
“The colour awards have become a tradition in team and individual events at the AUGs and it is important to honour those who gained green and gold status.”
