A ninth-wicket stand of 36 between Tom Keirath and Josh Toyer helped Sydney University to a first innings win over Fairfield-Liverpool at Sydney University No.1 Oval on Saturday.

Keirath (21) and Toyer (20 not out) guided Sydney University to 183 in reply to Fairfield-Liverpool’s 179 in the two-day contest played over consecutive Saturdays. The visitors were 3-94 when stumps were drawn in the second innings.

The win consolidated Sydney University’s second position on the Sydney Grade Cricket competition ladder, which is headed by Bankstown on 40 points. Sydney University (39), Sydney (30), Blacktown (30), Fairfield-Liverpool (29) and Manly-Warringah (29) make up the top six.

And with Sydney University’s Second, Third and Fourth grades gaining first innings victories and the Poidevin-Gray side collecting the points over Parramatta at University No.1 Oval on Sunday, the Students moved to 6th on the Club Championship ladder.

Having dismissed Fairfield-Liverpool for 179 after the visitors won the toss and batted, Sydney University were teetering at 6-123 at stumps on day one, with the defiant Mail unbeaten on 61.

Mail eventually departed for 74, with the score on 147, leaving Keirath and Toyer to eke out the runs. The prolific former NSW representative has amassed 588 runs at 84 from his seven knocks this season and looks on the way to yet another 1000-run plus season. He’s also taken nine wickets at 15.9 with a best return of 4-18.
