Sydney University need three quick wickets to avoid a hefty run chase when their two-day match against UNSW resumes at Alan Davidson Oval next Saturday.

The hosts went to stumps at a healthy 7-286 on Saturday, thanks to a 131-run contribution from opener Nicholas Selman, who hit 13 boundaries and a pair of sixes in his 252-ball stay.

Selman shared a 105-run fifth-wicket partnership with Jude Fernandopulle (42) and a 47-run fourth-wicket stand with Jack Scriven (31) to help put UNSW in a strong position.

Tim Ley (3-38) and Ben Joy (2-50), who shared the bowling honours, will be hoping for some quick scalps on Saturday.

Sydney University head the Belvidere Cup competition on 49 points, with Sutherland (49) Parramatta (46), Campbelltown-Camden (46), Sydney (46) and Manly-Warringah (44) making up the top six.

Following the UNSW match, Sydney University will be up against Bankstown at University Oval on February 24 and March 3, and finish the competition proper with a limited overs fixture against Campbelltown-Camden at Raby Oval on March 10.

The Club Championship is headed by Parramatta on 1190 points, with Manly-Warringah (1148), Sydney (1123) and Sydney University (1011) threatening.
