All-rounder Ian Moran punished the University of NSW bowling attack for 263 minutes at Sydney University No.1 Oval on Saturday on his was to 152, allowing the hosts to declare at 4-325.

While Moran was busy hitting his highest first grade score, that included 13 boundaries and four sixes, he also figured in a 181-run stand with No.3 Scott Henry (82), his highest partnership since coming to grade in the 2005-06 season.

His previous highest partnership was 146 with opener Will Hay – against Gordon last season. Any chance of breaking that record was extinguished when captain Hay was run out for one on Saturday, giving him plenty of time to contemplate a closure.

He called a halt to the innings late in the day, giving Sydney University’s Mark Cameron and Josh Toyer eight overs to work on UNSW openers Angus Robson and James McNeil, who held out to be 0-24 at stumps.

An intriguing day’s play should ensue between the two arch rivals next Saturday.

UNSW Seconds were well poised at 9-378 at stumps on day one, thanks to Murray Creed’s unbeaten 207, while their Thirds were 7-244 at stumps.

Sydney University Fourths will need quick wickets next Saturday, with UNSW 1-119 in reply to Sydney University’s 191, while UNSW Fifths were also well-positioned at 9-229 at stumps on day one at St Paul’s College Oval.

Northern District proved too strong for Universities in the opening round of the Sydney women’s grade competition at Waitara Oval.

The hosts racked up 1-129 off just 28.3 overs in reply to Universities 8-128 in their limited overs fixture.

Gordon also proved too strong – in Round 2 – posting 6-149 in reply to Universities 4-114.
