The scheduled Women’s National Basketball League game between the Sydney Uni Flames and Townsville Fire on Friday, February 4 has been postponed due to impact on travel caused by Cyclone Yasi.
With the cyclone set to create significant issues in North Queensland, the WNBL, Sydney Flames and Townsville Fire have agreed to re-schedule the game until Tuesday, February 15.
The Category Five cyclone is set to impact any travel to and from North Queensland and with the focus on the safety and welfare of our northern colleagues, the Sydney Flames have agreed the postponement is essential.
The Flames and Fire were scheduled to clash on Friday in a game that will have a major bearing on the play-off race and will now play this WNBL encounter in the final week of the 2010/2011 regular season.
Flames coach Karen Dalton said the decision to postpone the game was necessary as many North Queenslanders face the daunting task of preparing for and recovering from such a storm.
“In situations such as this, basketball becomes secondary and our thoughts are with the Fire players and staff, as well as all North Queenslanders,” she said.
“Queensland has already had a very difficult time with Mother Nature and to now face this is a terrible situation.
“Like all basketball people, the Flames would like to extended their thoughts and prayers to the Townsville Fire and look forward to meeting them all again in a couple of weeks,” she added.
Tip-off for the Tuesday, February 15 game will be 7pm and all Flames sponsors and supporters are encouraged to attend to show their support for the Fire and cheer the Flames on towards a potential play-off berth.
