Sydney University got off to a powerful start at the first day of the Australian University Games (AUG’s), on the Gold Coast, winning one
gold and two silver medals.

Sydney University Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Alex Wong won Sydney University’s first medal of the week- gold- in the cycling
road race event. Wong beat 41 other competitors to the finishing line in hot conditions.

Fencing athletes Margarita Sokolovskaja and Daniel Osvath claimed silver medals in their respective events – women’s foil and men’s foil.
Sokolovskaja is a Sydney Uni EAP scholarship holder.

Sydney Uni claimed two comfortable wins in the men’s Australian Rules Football, defeating Bond University by 26 points and the University of
Western Sydney by 57.

In badminton, the women finished with two wins (5-0 and 4-1) and one loss (1-4) after the first day of competition. The news wasn’t as great
for the men, who were defeated in both of their matches.

The open baseball team hammered UNSW 29-0 in their only game today.

In basketball, the men’s team won a nail-biting game 52-50 against Monash, who claimed a silver medal at last year’s AUG’s. The boys will
face another stern test tomorrow, against one of the tournament heavyweights- Melbourne University. The women’s team were in great form as they disposed of Melbourne University by eight points.

It was a perfect first day for Sydney Uni football. The men’s team accounted for La Trobe University 3-0, while the women scored 25 goals in
their two matches without conceding a goal. They will be looking to improve on their silver medal at last year’s AUG’s.

Mixed handball suffered a heart-breaking two point loss to Edith Cowan University (ECU). They play Curtain University and UNSW tomorrow.

The women’s hockey team got off to a dream start, with a 3-0 victory over ECU. The men’s team finished the day with one draw and one loss.

In netball, the women’s team experienced a win, either side of two losses in a tough first day. The mixed team were unlucky to go down to
Bond University by a single goal.

The women’s softball team belted the University of Ballarat (UBAT) 24-0 in their only game today.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams swept all competition aside in a comfortable first day of action.

It was a mixed day of results for the men’s and women’s touch teams. Both teams won one game and lost the other.

In mixed ultimate frisbee competition, Sydney Uni lost both of their games in tight tussles.

The women’s volleyball team easily accounted for their opposition, sweeping aside Queensland University of Technology and Adelaide
University in straight sets. The men’s team won one game and lost the other.

In water polo, Sydney Uni got off to a great start. Both the women’s (8-6) and men’s (9-8) teams had wins.

In other sports, the golf team completed their first round – results are indeterminable at this stage. The sailing team had a day of
training. Sailing competition will begin tomorrow. Athletics track and field events kick-off for the week early tomorrow morning.
