The Growthbuilt Sydney University Australian National Football Club (SUANFC) enjoyed another successful weekend of football across two home venues in Henson Park and No.1 Oval.
With six wins from nine games, the Students have a majority of sides sitting in the top half of their respective competitions.
NEAFL
The NEAFL side claimed their second consecutive win to start the season with a 16.13 (109)- 10.13 (73) victory over the visiting Redland Bombers.
Coach Tom Morrison belives his sides best footy is yet to come, but was impressed with the groups effort especially in the final quarter. “Our effort was much improved and the boys worked hard through some adversity to win what was a fairly close contest. We still have a lot to work on, but two matches in we are 2-0 and are a long way off our best football.” Morrison said.
Despite a close first three quarters, the Students put the pedal down and scored the last five goals of the match to come away 36 point victors.
“I was really happy with our response this week and the players who came into the group contributed. Good times ahead if we can keep importing and building the synergy amongst the group,” he added.
In his 100th game for the club, Austin Lucy was among Students best, with 23 disposals, 10 hit-outs, eight inside 50s, six clearances, five tackles and a fantastic goal. “He’s played a number of unfavourable roles and he just competes and has a great work ethic. You can put him anywhere on the ground and know he’ll play his roles like he did today,” Morrison said in reference to Lucy.
Consistently impressive midfielder, Tom Young, also put on a dominant performance finishing with 34 disposals, six clearances and four goals, polling maximum NEAFL MVP votes.
Premier Division
Prems had a hard fought victory over the East Coast Eagles, winning the contest, 9.11 (65)- 8.7 (55).
“It was a tough day at Henson for all teams but Prems saw the worst of it. Hot and windy conditions didn’t make for a great game. There were more turnovers than usual and our inability to be great by foot meant we didn’t get great looks forward of centre, so goals were hard to come by,” coach Tony Overall explained.
“We scraped our way to 20 point lead at the half, but East Coast had good third term and we only lead by one at the last change. It was a tight final term, with both sides leading for periods but East Coast kicked two in a row late to snatch the lead.”
“Our midfield group who had no rotation in the last quarter were superb. They just willed us back into it. We kicked next two and came away with a tough win.”
