Sydney Uni Athletics Club athletes competed at the Melbourne Track Classic over the weekend.
Continuing her breakout season was Michelle Jenneke who continues to improve week on week. Jenneke ran second to Olympic Champion Sally Pearson in the 100 hurdles in a time of 13.22. Annie Rubie was also impressive in the women’s 400m running 2nd in blustery conditions. The run although not her quickest was the most aggressive performance by the Commonwealth and World Championship representative and augers well for her leading into next weekend’s National Championships in Brisbane, where she is one of the favourites for the win.
Josh Ralph is also moving in the right direction storming home over the last 200m to finish 4th in the men’s 800 in a time of 1.47.51. Ralph has returned from a long injury lay off and is a big threat to win the national title having shown scintillating closing speed at the conclusion of the race over the weekend. Ralph will be very hard to beat in a slow tactical affair.
In the field events Nicola McDermott had another big leap in the women’s high jump getting clear at 1.84 to finish 3rd. Nick Van Gelder jumped 7.54 in the men’s long jump for a 5th place finish.
This coming weekend’s action sees SUAC athletes compete at the National Championships in Brisbane starting Thursday.
