Sydney University’s four-wicket loss to Northern District at Mark Taylor Oval on Saturday saw the defending premiers drop to sixth on the First Grade competition ladder.

Campbelltown-Camden head the Belvidere Cup ladder on 32 points after seven rounds, with Eastern Suburbs (31), Randwick-Petersham (31), Sutherland (30), Parramatta (27) and Sydney University (25) making up the top six.

Losses in Second, Third and Fourth grades on Saturday saw SUCC drop to seventh on the Club Championship ladder.

Parramatta head the Club Championship ladder on 678 points, ahead of Sydney (565), Manly-Warringah (555), Northern District (503), Eastern Suburbs (489) and Randwick (484), with Sydney University next on 463 points.

After winning the toss and electing to bat on Saturday in the first of the 50-over rounds, all of the University top order made solid starts, but they were rolled for 227 off 48.3 overs.

Openers Hayden Kerr (54) and Steven Hobson (27) put on 91 before Kerr was stumped off ex-Sydney University leg-spinner Jonte Pattison. His 49-ball stay included six boundaries and a six.

Damien Mortimer (37), Ed Cowan (29), Steven Hobson (27) and skipper Liam Robertson (26) all made contributions but it was slow going against the attack of Joshua Poysden (3-51), Matthew Phillips (2-33), Tom Felton (2-41) and Pattison (2-42).

The hosts also relied on their top order with openers Jack Colley (28) and Henry Hunt (39) setting the pace. Andrew Harriott kept the scoreboard ticking over with 51 from a 69-ball stay, while Daniel Anderson (41 not out) and Jonathan Whealing (30) saw them home at 6-228 with three balls to spare.

The Students will meet Fairfield-Liverpool in another 50-over game at Rosedale Oval this Saturday, before the competition breaks for Christmas and resumes on January 6 with a 50-over round against St George.
