Sydney University Rugby League Club had the privilege of playing their home game on Saturday, at Oval No1.

Both First Grade and Second Grade made the most of their time on Oval No. 1 win 30-10 and 18-16 respectively.

“Our defence was very strong today and had the opposition looking over the shoulder. Our forwards paved the way for our backs to score some good tries.” said Sydney Uni coach Jim Pizanias.

First Grade started strongly and scored a 70-metre solo try in the first five minutes, by Greg Nguyen, which was converted by halfback and Captain Luke Williams.

Another two quick tries saw the score blow out to 16-0 before Cumberland College scored to make the score 16-6. As the hooter was sounding Sydney University scored and converted to take a 22-6 lead at half-time.

The second half saw Cumberland score in the corner to make the score 16-10. The next 15 minutes saw some bruising defence by both sides until Greg Nguyen scored his 3rd try of the day to take the score to 24-6

On full-time, Sydney University scored after a brilliant movement down the left-hand side of the field saw Luke Williams put in a cross field kick to see Dan Denford score beside the posts.

Reserve grade started slowly against Newcastle University and were behind at halftime 16-10.

In the second half, the boys come out firing! And with a five-star performance from five-eighth Ben Richards, they came away with a hard fought win 18-16.

“All the boys defended strongly and Newcastle University did not score a point in the second half,” coach Pizanias said.
