Sydney University Football Club took an early lead in the Club Championship when they posted a clean sweep of grade and Colts games against Penrith at Nepean Rugby Park on Saturday.

Following their high-scoring 46-39 win over premiers Eastwood at headquarters in the opening round of the Shute Shield, Sydney University Firsts backed up with an 80-22 result over the Emus after leading 42-12 at half-time.

Winger Matthew Narracott scored three of the Students’ 12 tries, while Angus Roberts posted 25 points with a try and 10 conversions. The in-form fullback scored 21 points against the Woodies in the season opener.

Despite the scoreline, Penrith scored the first points of the match and provided plenty of starch for a physical first half-hour before the Sydney University backs hit their straps and began posting points,

With the match being the televised Shute Shield fixture of the day, Penrith weren’t about to let the opportunity slide, and they opened the second half in the same tough manner as the first, resulting in another two converted tries.

But the Students finished the second half as they had the first, with a flurry of tries off some penetrating execution.

The result saw the Students go to the top of the Shute Shield ladder, while Penrith earned a bonus point for their try-scoring efforts. Their task doesn’t get easier, with a third round match against Eastwood, while the Students will face a tough opponent in Randwick at Coogee Oval.
