Six Sydney University Elite Athlete Program members have won silver medals as part of the New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) water polo team (five for the women and one for the men’s team) at last week’s 2010 Institute Challenge held at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.

The NSWIS Women’s team, featuring Sydney University Elite Athlete Program members Keesja Gofers, Alicia Brightwell, Hannah Buckling, Emily Scott, Georgia Clarke and fellow Sydney Uni Water Polo representative Joanne Whitehorn, remained undefeated throughout the tournament before falling to tournament favourites Queensland in the gold medal match 10-8.

The Women’s final was in the balance until a 5-1 third quarter goal blitz from Queensland allowed them to pull away from a determined NSWIS team, relegating our girls to silver.

In the Men’s competition NSWIS made it through to the Grand Final after defeating Queensland in a tense extra time period.

In the Grand Final an unlucky NSWIS were nine seconds away from extra time, before they fell to a spectacular backhand goal to do down 9-8 to the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS).

Sydney University Elite Athlete Program member Scott Nicholson joined fellow Sydney Uni water polo Lachie Hollis and Nathan Cargill in claiming silver for the Men’s team.
