Brydens Sydney Uni Flames Belinda Snell and Katie Ebzery have their eyes set on gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after the Australian Opals won three from three in the women’s preliminary pool rounds, defeating Mozambique, Canada and England. 

The Australian Opals avoided the qualifying finals, progressing straight to the semi-finals on Friday. Last Sunday, the Opals powered past England in emphatic fashion, trouncing them 118-55 in their third round Group match in Townsville.

Centre, Liz Cambage inflicted a large part of the damage with a game-high 30 points, including a perfect 10 from 10 from the free-throw line in 17:46 minutes of carnage.

Flames and Opals Captain, now boasting an impressive three from three strike rate as reigning Australian Captain, pitched in with 3 points while starting point-guard, Katie Ebzery contributed seven points in the big win.

In the group’s match against Mozambique, their first of the Games, they claimed an incredible 80-point win, 133-53.

Belinda Snell had an oustanding game, shooting at 83% with 15 points, three of which were three-pointers. Katie-Ebzery also made an impact, shooting three points with four assists and a steal.

In their 100-61 win over main rivals, Canada, Belinda Snell had 10 points with two rebounds and an assist, while Katie-Rae Ebzery scored five points with three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The semi-finals are set for Friday, 13 April with Australia to take on New Zealand at 9.00pm. Canada will face England in their semi. The Bronze and Gold Medal matches will be held on Saturday, 14 April.
