A host of Sydney Uni Volleyball club players have been selected in NSW teams. They include Ben Lalic and Oscar Konakoff in the men’s Under-17 team; Craig Lowe, Jordan Young, Anthony Gigliotti, Liam Watson and Oliver Konakoff in the men’s Under-19s; and Edmund Walkley and Yaegan Doran in the men’s Under-21s.

Heather Cockburn has been selected in the women’s Under-19 team, and Adriana Amato, Sarah Gleeson, Stefanie Lalic and Gabrielle Woodhouse in the women’s Under-21 team.

In other SUV news, Craig Lowe, a young gun who has been with the club since 2006, has taken another step towards his dream to playing for Australia at the 2020 Olympics.

Craig has turned down an Australian football scholarship with St Kilda to take up a full-time residential volleyball scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport. He attended the four Australian Junior Camps in 2007, and was selected in the AJVC All Star Team.

Meanwhile, the summer social mixed volleyball competition is well into the minor rounds, with eight rounds completed to date. The competition this season is very close with the Flaming Swans on top of the table, closely followed by the Frogs.

The autumn competition commenced Thursday, April 10 at Robyn Webster Stadium, Holbeach Avenue, Tempe.

SUV is looking for new players and teams to join the competition. Interested players should contact Libby Abraham on [email protected].

Those wishing to improve skills and technique should attend Skills Training at the H.K. Ward Gymnasium from 6-15pm to 8pm on Tuesday nights. Cost is $5 each week, and you must be a member of Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (and have a swipe card – see the entrance for paperwork and to pay $55).

Training is well and truly under way for all Sydney Volleyball League teams, with Honours and 1st Division squads to be named next week. For those interested in playing 2nd Division, we encourage you to attend the 1st Division trainings as well – if we don’t have enough players showing up, we won’t enter the team into a competition.

The discounted SVL fees ($25 off) or free polo shirt offer has been extended to include this week, but this will be the final week. Fees are $475 for seniors and $400 for junior players (Under 19). Please get your cash or cheque (made out to Sydney Uni Volleyball) to Ed Binnie at the start or end of training.

The Illawarra State Cup will be held on April 5 and 6 and all players in the Honours or 1st Division teams are expected to attend. Please tell your team coach that you intend to come.

The SUV Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, April 13 at 2pm in the Mezzanine Meeting Room, Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre.

If you would like to know more about the club, are able to offer your time or want to be involved and have a say in the club’s activities, please come along!

There are specific roles for the club executive (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary), but you can also be involved in any number of other ways – social co-ordinator, assistant treasurer, team manager, University Games representative or in junior development. If you are keen to be involved, contact [email protected] or just come along on the day.
