Students reach the summit

Sydney University's eight-match winning streak in the Sydney Premier Division AFL competition continued on Saturday and with it came the competition lead.

The Students accounted for 2009 premiers East Coast Eagles 16:19 (115) to 12:5 (77) under lights at University No,1 Oval to claim the lead on 40 points after 12 rounds - with 10 wins and two losses.

With six rounds of the competition proper to play, they head the Eagles (36), North Shore (36), Western Suburbs (36), Pennant Hills (28) and Campbelltown (20) in the top six.

The Students have a good run home, being away to North Shore this Saturday, hosting Pennant Hills in a night game at No.1 Oval on July 17, and UNSW-Eastern Suburbs the following week, travelling to Wollongong, hosting Campbelltown, and travelling to St George to round out the competition.

With top spot up for grabs on Saturday evening, a tough match was on the cards and that's what the two competition heavyweights produced, with the lead changing a host of times in the first half.

The Eagles led by three points at quarter time, but the Students took a four-point lead into the major break.

The third quarter was evenly contested until late in the term when Sydney University established a 15-point buffer. The floodgates opened in the final quarter with the Students creating numerous chances to run out 38-point winners.

Mark Egan was again the focal point for the Students' attack, finishing with four goals to take his season tally to 37. Michael Higgins, Tom Elkington and Jack Caspersonn also stood out for the winners.

Peter Dugmore led the way with five goals for the Eagles, who were also well served by defender Rowan Bilkey and Steven Merkel.

The win set up an interesting run for the minor premiership and the double chance finals play.

The Students are well-placed in the Club Championship with Division One running second to UTS, and the Under 18s running third behind East Coast Eagles and North Shore.
