14.04.08 – Nick Bailey

Sydney University have continued their impressive start to the season in the Sydney AFL Premier Division, notching up a tough 14 point away victory over Wollongong Lions at North Dalton Park on Saturday.

Uni are one of only three sides still undefeated in the competition after their 14.11-95 to 11.15-81 win.
For the second week running the Students shot out of the blocks, booting five goals to one in the opening term to set up a handy 20 point quarter time lead.

A quieter second quarter from Uni meant they went in only 15 points up a half time, before a stirring fightback from Wollongong in the third term reduced the deficit to a single point at the final change.
However Uni stormed home with a five goal final quarter to clinch the second round win. Mark Egan booted five goals in a best on ground performance, whilst Gary Burch and captain Frank Punch were the other standouts.

Benjamin Mankarious, vice captain Joel Carr, and Alexander Lee were the other multiple goalkickers for Uni, kicking two apiece.

For Wollongong Daniel Posch and Graeme Batty kicked two goals each, whilst Clinton Wells, Matthew Adamson and Shane Davis were the best performers on the day.

Uni sit in equal first place on the ladder with UNSW/Eastern Suburbs and Pennant Hills, and will be looking to continue their strong start when they take on the East Coast Eagles at University Oval 1 at 2:30pm this Saturday.

The Students will be weary of an Eagles side who were impressive this week in beating last year’s Grand Finalists St. George by 33 points.

Meanwhile, Sydney University Reserves made a dream start to the season as they smashed Wollongong by 96 points in their first match of 2008. Keeping Wollongong goalless for two quarters of the match, Uni booted 20.12-132 to the Lions’ 6.0-36, with Leigh McWhirter kicking seven goals for the Students.
