Sydney University Swim Club (SUSC) secured eight medals at last weekend’s NSW State Open Championships held at the Sydney Olympic Pool and Aquatic Centre at Homebush.

Sydney University, represented by a squad of 18 swimmers, finished fourth on the points ladder (477) slightly behind Hunter (639), Cranbrook Eastern Eagle (539) and Carlile (523).  

Melanie Houghton was the star of the meet, finishing with gold in the 50m butterfly (26.93) in front of Commonwealth Games gold medalist Yolane Kukla, and silver in the 100m butterfly (1.00.70)

David Wise claimed gold in the 50m backstroke (25.72), Tim Halliday won silver in the 50m butterfly (24.72), and Sam McConnell claimed bronze in the 100m butterfly (53.69).

The men’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay team, consisting of Tim Halliday, Sam McConnell, Jono Newton and Stephen Parkesm claimed silver.

The women’s 4 x 100 medley relay team of Madaleine Owen, Meagan Ramsay, Mel Houghton and Christine Kidd also claimed silver medals, while the men’s 4 x 100 medley relay, represented by  David Wise, Alistaire Pickles, Sam McConnell and Jono Newton, finished with bronze.

Other SUSC members to finish in the top 10 in one or more of their events included Tim Halliday, Sam McConnell, Jono Newton, Madaleine Owen, Stephen Parkes, Alistaire Pickles, Meagan Ramsay and David Wise.

Age swimmers Angelique Barrett (12 years) and Paige Burland (14 years) also performed well in their individual events.
