Sydney Uni-Staminade travelled south last Thursday to compete in Melbourne’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, kicking off with the Towards Zero Melbourne criterium followed by the big Road Race on Saturday.
The elite women’s cycling team, formed in late 2017, sent a six-strong contingent made up of Amy Vesty, Abby Sneddon, Angela Smith, Georgie Whitehouse, Jade Colligan and Megan Scott. Gina Ricardo also rode in the UCI 1.1 Deakin University Elite Women’s Race.
In the women’s race, Georgie Whitehouse was outstanding, breaking free to gain a buffer of over a minute. Eventually met by BePink’s Lisa Morzenti, Whitehouse maintained her lead to capture first intermediate sprint for three. Whitehouse also sat on top of placings for hill climbs and took third for Subaru’s Queen of the Mountain.
As the race continued in hot conditions, fresh contenders edged closer to the front of the pack with Australian Chloe Hosking (riding for Italy-based cycling team Ale-Cipollini) finishing first in the Deakin Women’s Race.
Attracting around 100,000 spectators – on the ground and following the action online – the event was a tremendous success showcasing not only Melbourne’s picturesque coastal landscape, but the breath of talent across Australian (and international) cycling.
A finish to be proud of (+32.15 from 9h47:42 in the teams classification), Sydney Uni-Staminade proved they are a crew to watch.
