Sydney University Judo Club blackbelt Istvan Szasz won the Under 100kg category at the NSW Judo Open, held at the Blacktown Leisure Centre last weekend.
Szasz was the club’s only place-getter at the Open, beating the national second place-holder and Australian senior team member by osaekomi (hold down or pin) in the final.
The Open was contested by the top Australian athletes and a host of international competitors from the Oceania region, including New Zealand, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea.
The tournament was the first outing for the Australian senior team, freshly selected from last week’s Oceania selection tournament for the World Championships in Tokyo later this year.
Sydney University fielded a small team of competitors among the current Olympic and international competitors.
Not content with one title, Szasz also entered the Open division and came second after fighting entrants from all weight ranges.
SUJC thanks all those who gave up their weekend to volunteer at the event, including Hannah, Ben, Felix, Eddie, Alex and, of course, Randall Jones.
