A dogged eighth-wicket stand from Daya Singh and Dean Crawford thwarted Sydney University’s push for outright points in the two-day match against Bankstown that finished at University Oval on Saturday.

Joining forces at 7-175 in their second innings – still 154 in arrears – Singh remained not out on 29 off 97 balls, while No.9 Crawford was even more stoic, holding out for 16 off 85 deliveries.

Singh batted for two minutes short of two hours, while Crawford was at the crease for an hour and 46 minutes, as Bankstown finished the day at 7-221, denying the Students an outright result.

Sydney University had certainly put themselves in position for maximum points on day one when they declared at 2-394 on the back of centuries from Ben Trevor-Jones (144) and Damien Mortimer and a tantalising 96 from James Larkin.

Tim Ley then struck twice in his four overs before stumps, claiming openers Nathan Hinton (lbw) and Mitchell Hinds (bowled) to have the visitors 2-19 going into the second day.

Ley began day two in the same dangerous form, snaring another four victims to finish with 6-18 as the visitors slumped to 65 all out and another turn at the crease.

All of the Bankstown top five made positive starts in their second innings – Nathan Hinton 42, Jake Fawsett 34, Usman Butt 31, Daya Singh 29 not out and Mitchell Hinds 29 – but wickets fell at regular intervals before Singh and Crawford entered the fray.

The Students had to settle for six competition points to sit second on the ladder behind Manly-Warringah.

Sydney University also claimed first innings wins in Second, Third and Fourth grades, with Bankstown snaring first innings points in Fifth Grade.
