Michael Power has capped off an extraordinary week by winning the men’s singles title at this year’s Sydney University Open tennis tournament on the Manning courts.

The University of Sydney Elite Athlete took control of the final from the first point and never looked back, defeating No. 2 seed Ethan Coker 6-0 6-1 in just under an hour.

It was a stunning victory. Power’s formidable serve was on song throughout, backed up by a cannonade of passing shots off both sides.

“I felt really comfortable out there today,” he said after the match. “I wish there were more tournaments on grass.”

Coker was simply outgunned. He paid tribute to Power’s performance: “He played a great match. He just didn’t miss.”

Power now heads to the Gold Coast to spearhead Sydney University’s Australian University Games tennis teams’ gold medal defence.

The women’s singles title at the Open was won by No. 1 seed Abbie Myers over Victorian No. 2 seed Ashleigh Capannolo.

Myers then teamed with Jennifer Nguyen to win the women’s doubles final from Capannolo and Alexandra Osborne.

Coker and Jacob Meredith took out the men’s doubles, edging past Power and Chris Peters in their semi-final before accounting for the No. 1 seeds in the final.
