The Southern Design Sydney Uni Sparks drop out of the top eight on the SEABL ladder, following a tough weekend in Tasmania. Thirteen was the unlucky number for the Sparks, as they were defeated by the Hobart Chargers, 84-71, before suffering another thirteen point loss to Launceston the following night.

In Hobart in front of a vocal crowd, the Sparks had the first of the action, leading 7-4 after the first two and a half minutes. However, this was to be the last time the Sparks held a lead. A lack of defensive intensity allowed the home side to pile on many points in the opening quarter and take a commanding, 27-19, lead into quarter time.

The visiting Sparks spent the rest of the game playing catch up and despite producing some great patches of play, the Chargers were able to control the game for the final three quarters.

In the absence of Tahlia Tupaea, Shanae Greaves led the way for Sparks finishing with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Lara McSpadden also had a strong game inside, adding 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brydens Sydney Uni Flames commit, Brittany Smart, troubled the visitors with 19 points and 10 assists.

The next day, the Sparks travelled north to Launceston to take on the Tornadoes. In brisk conditions, the Sparks got out to a decent start, however a dry patch mid-way through the first allowed the home side to jump out to a quick 10 point lead. The Sparks fought back and trailed 23-17 at the first break.

A strong second quarter from Sydney Uni, saw them trail by only five points by half time. However, a slow start to the third had them on them on the back foot once again, down by 13 at three quarter time. Despite some poor patches from the Sparks, the young side never gave up at any stage. An even final quarter wasn’t enough and the Tornadoes finished with a 76-63 victory.

Shanae Greaves again led the Sparks in scoring, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Susannah Walmsley added 15 points and 4 assists in the loss.

For the Tornadoes, Flames guard, Ally Wilson was hard to stop finishing with 21 points and 8 rebounds.

The Sparks will look to get their season back on track when they take on Canberra this weekend. The match will be played at Hills Basketball in Castle Hill in Saturday 26th May at 5pm.
