Lions on song to defend titles

Sydney University Lions men’s and women’s water polo teams opened the 2018 National League season in the form that suggests they could well defend both titles, with both teams claiming the NWPL minor premiership last year.

The women's team went on to win the championship, with the men's falling in the final.

This year, the men’s team remain unbeaten after five rounds, sitting on 36 points from nine wins, with three games up their sleeve.

Hunter Hurricanes (36), Fremantle Mariners (32), UNSW Wests Magpies (30), FYFE Adelaide Jets (16) and Drummoyne Devils (16) make up the top six.

The Lions opened their season in Round 2 with an 11-8 result over UTS Balmain Tigers and a 10-6 win over Drummoyne Devils.

Round 3 saw them travel to Queensland where they accounted for Queensland Breakers 17-7 and 12-8, and Brisbane Barracudas 20-2 and 19-8.

Returning to Sydney for Round 4, they posted a 10-3 result overs UTS Balmain Tigers and a 10-9 win over ACU Cronulla Sharks.

And Round 5 saw them defeat the Sharks 6-5.

UNSW Wests Killer Whales head the women’s national league on 40 points, with 10 wins from 11 matches. Sydney University Lions (28), Drummoyne Devils (24), Fremantle Marlins (22), Balmain Tigers (20) and Brisbane Barracudas (16) make up the top six.

Sydney University have two games up their belt and Drummoyne have three in reserve due to the structure of the draw.

Sydney University opened their season in Round 2 with a 14-8 win over Hunter Hurricanes, with Keesja Gofer topscoring with four and Hannah Buckling grabbing three goals. They backed that up with a 10-8 win over Drummoyne Devils, with Buckling snaring four and Gofers scoring three.

Round three saw the Lions travelling to Queensland, where they accounted for Queensland Breakers 10-7 (Isobel Bishop 4 and Danielle Morrisey 4), before suffering duel losses – 5-4 and 7-4 – to Brisbane Barracudas.

Back in Sydney for Round 4 and the Lions returned to the winning list with a 10-5 result over Balmain Tigers and a 10-6 win over ACU Cronulla Sharks.

Round five saw the Lions post a 9-8 win over ACU Cronulla Sharks.

Round 6 will see the Lions take on UNSW Wests Magpies at Ashfield Aquatic Centre on Saturday, with the men’s game starting at 1pm and the women’s match scheduled for 2.30pm.
