For the first time in four years, the Sydney University Women’s AFL team have secured a place in the grand final, defeating the Balmain Dockers by 14 points.

Completing the season in second place, on Saturday University faced the minor premiers, the Balmain Dockers. Having lost to the Dockers twice this season, University started as the underdogs but were keen for redemption.

In a stellar first quarter, University far outplayed the Dockers, going into the first break leading 4.5.29 to 0.1.1. The University midfielders dominated clearances and provided accurate feeds to the forwards. With the forward line in great form, University took control of the play early.

The Dockers came out firing in the second term and scored two successive goals. The University backline were under incessant pressure from the firey Dockers but with some amazing defensive marks by Kyrsten Winkley, University held their composure and secured their goal line.

The second half of the game saw an arm wrestle between the midfielders. The Dockers were keen to hang on to their undefeated status and University could smell the monumental victory.

It was University’s day to shine and their grand final desire prevailed. An outstanding performance across the park from the Uni girls, who won the first spot in the September 3 Grand Final. The final score 5.11.41 to 4.3.27.

Congratulations to the University Bombers on a strong season and an inspirational semi-final win. Special mention goes to Kristy “Spida” Williams and Amelia Dever-Kavangh for their excellent on ball performances and constant forward pressure.
