Robin Bell

profilepic_bellBorn in Cape Town, South Africa, Bell came to Australia at a young age and took up canoeing as a 15-year-old in Perth. He competed for the West Australia Institute of Sport before moving east to link up with the Australian Institute of Sport and the University of Sydney.

His aim since taking up the sport has been to finish in the top eight at the World Championships and compete at Athens. He achieved the first aim when he won a silver medal at the 1999 World Championships.

The Sports Scholarship holder won an Olympic berth after impressive performances at the Athens World Cup and Olympic qualification regatta, held in Athens in April.

Australia had already been guaranteed a place in the C1 men's class going into the Athens race, and the competition was between Bell, Kynan Maley and Justin Boocock for a position on the Olympic team.

The decider came down to the final run of the day, when one second separated Bell and Maley, who was holding third position in the world-class field. But with experience up his sleeve and the Olympic position within reach, Bell charged ahead to finish fourth, beating Maley by four seconds.

Although a medal would have topped off an already successful career, Bell placed fourth overall in Athens.

After an impressive fourth in Athens, Bell went one better in Beijing to finish with a bronze medal in the Men's C1 slalom. In doing so, Bell became the first Australian male to win a whitewater medal at the Olympic Games. The result is all the more impressive after Bell suffered stress fractures to his shins while training in 2006. Robin told the ABC that the bronze medal was the highlight of his career.

I felt pleased to take a photo with you. Thanks! I've been to Australia. The beautiful scenery and friendly people left me a good impression. Hope you can do better and better in the future. Good luck! The girl from China, Cathy.

Well done on a superb performance over in Beijing Robin.
It must be such a relief to get the unfortunate placing from the last Olympics out of your system and to step on the podium. That really is the pinnacle of World Sport and you have excelled. I look forward to catching up once back in Australia. Enjoy the rest of the games – I want plenty of stories.
