Trent Franklin

profilepic_franklinSydney Uni Blue Trent Franklin will be making his second Olympic appearance in Beijing, as part of an Australian team eager to improve on their 9th place finishing in 2004. A state level junior baseball representative and swimmer, by the age of 15 Franklin had become bored with his sporting endeavours and decided to try something which would combine elements from his previous pursuits.

As a result Trent took up water polo, initially playing for Ryde before joining the Sydney University Lions in 1997 when he commenced his Bachelor of Science degree at the Uni. Staying on to complete a Masters in Commerce, Trent has been a regular fixture in the Lions side for over ten years, winning three national titles in 2002-3 and 2005, as well as leading the league scoring in 2004 and being awarded his Blue in 2003.

Trent played in his first NSW junior side in 1996 and stepped up to the national junior team in 1998, claiming the silver medal at he 1999 Junior World Championships in Kuwait. That same year Trent made his national senior side debut, and since 2001 been one of the first players selected for the national side, winning a Commonwealth silver medal in 2002 as well as a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport.

In 2006 Trent was part of the Australian team which took home the gold medal from the Commonwealth Championships, as well as bronze at the World League Super Finals in 2007 and 2008. Trent has set up his own insurance company, which he often runs on the road, and has heavily involved himself in supporting the Autism Spectrum and other charities.

Franklin was a member of the Men's Water Polo Team, who improved upon their ninth place finish in Athens to stand at eighth overall in Beijing. The team did themselves proud against some of the heavyweights of the sport, with a thrilling one point loss to eventual gold medallists Hungary, who also won gold in Sydney and Beijing. Australian great Tom Hoad described the match as the greatest game Australia has ever played. The team needed a win against Montenegro to advance to the quarter-finals, and, though bravely holding the European champions to a draw, they narrowly missed out.
