Sydney Uni Water Polo centre forward Taniele Gofers' sporting career began in the pool, but it was as a junior competitive swimmer that she first tasted success on the water. Also a keen basketballer, it was at the age of 11 that sister Keesja (also a Sydney Uni water polo player) suggested she take up Water Polo. Initially playing for Ryde, Taniele joined the Sydney University side when she enrolled in a degree in Media and Communications at the Uni in 2005.
Taniele formed an integral part of the Sydney Uni Lions team which has made the finals every year since 2005, and which finished second at the end of the 2007 home and away season, and were minor premiers in 2008. Sadly the Lions are yet to replicate such success in the finals series, a fact which will only drive Taniele further for gold at Beijing.
Having placed third as part of the National Junior side at the 2005 World Championships, Taniele joined the Senior Australian team later that same year, winning the bronze medal at the Water Polo World League event in Russia, and finishing sixth at the World Aquatics Championships that same year.
Bronze turned to gold for Taniele and her teammates in 2006, as Australia took out the World Cup title, before a second placing at the World Championships in Melbourne later that year, alongside a World Super League Finals bronze medal in Tenerife. With the Australian national side having been ranked number one in the world since 2004, Taniele, now a veteran of 65 international matches, is desperate for the side to regain the Olympic title they surrendered in Athens.
At the impressive temple-shaped Ying Tung Natatorium, Taniele and Sydney Lions teammate Nikita Cuffe will take on Hungary, The Netherlands, and Australia's Athens conquerors Greece, in Group B.
Gofers was a member of the Women's Water Polo Team, which won bronze with a nail-biting marathon victory over Hungary. The teams were tied at 11-all after four quarters of regulation time and two overtime periods before Australian goalkeeper Emma Knox blocked the final shot of the shoot-out, clinching the win in the bronze medal play-off.
