Francis Hegerty

profilepic_hegertyFrancis first took up rowing in order to keep fit in the Rugby offseason, during his time at St Joseph's College in Sydney. Following his time at "Joeys", he undertook a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Sydney, as well as courses in Securities and Investments at the Financial Services Institute of Australasia. In 2002 he made the Australian under 23 Men's Eights crew, winning a bronze medal at the Under 23 World Titles in 2003.

Hegerty made his first Australian senior team in 2006, rowing in the Men's Four Crew that finished 15th at the World Championships. The following year the crew finished 12th at the World Titles, and missed out on automatic Olympic qualification as a result. The crew rallied, however, taking out the 2008 World Cup 2 title in Lucerne, Switzerland, as well as the final qualification regatta in Poland, to secure a place at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. All this despite losing Sydney University Boat Clubmate Matt Ryan just before the race to illness. Francis also rowed in the NSW crew that claimed the 2008 King's Cup, an event in which NSW has enjoyed success only 3 times in the last 24 years.

Hegerty and his team-mates in the men's coxless fours almost pulled off a major upset, leading with 200m to go in the final before being overtaken by the World Champion British crew. The Australians, the last four rowers to be selected in the Olympic squad, won a courageous silver medal. "It's more than you could dream about. I'm rapt, couldn't be prouder," Hegerty, a Sydney University Sports Scholarship holder, said after the race.

G'day Francis, have just read your profile on my new electric machine. Very good, though I was unable to find any reference to your Father, Mark. He, obviously, had no part in writing your profile! Best wishes for the future. Cous, Dominic.
