Robert Maitland

profilepic_maitlandWhilst a keen participant in rugby union, swimming, cricket, basketball, athletics and rowing in his time at St Joseph's College in Queensland, the most important sporting decision Robert Maitland made was to take up water polo with a friend at the age of 14 for local club St Peters. Less than a year after first taking up the sport, Robert made his first state team in 1997 in the Under 16s, before making the Australian Junior team in 1999 at the age of 16.

He took part in the 2001 and 2003 World Junior Championships, and was named MVP of the 2002 National Titles. That same year he joined the Sydney Uni Lions, forming part of the side which won National League premierships in 2002, 2003 and 2005. He was also named MVP of the 2003 National League Finals Series, and in 2005 made his national senior team debut at the World Championships in Montreal.

He also began his Masters in Commerce at the University in Sydney, having graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor's degree in Human Movement. Robert won gold as part of the Australian side at the 2006 Commonwealth Championships, and in 2007 travelled to Spain to play for Mediterrani in the Spanish National League. Following the Beijing Olympics he will return to Spain for a second season with the side, hopefully with an Olympic medal around his neck.

Maitland was a member of the Men's Water Polo Team, who improved upon their ninth place finish in Athens to stand at eighth overall in Beijing. The team did themselves proud against some of the heavyweights of the sport, with a thrilling one point loss to eventual gold medallists Hungary, who also won gold in Sydney and Beijing. Australian great Tom Hoad described the match as the greatest game Australia has ever played. The team needed a win against Montenegro to advance to the quarter-finals, and, though bravely holding the European champions to a draw, they narrowly missed out.
