Sam McGregor

profilepic_mcgregorNow a seasoned competitor as he prepares for his second Olympics, Sydney Uni Lion Sam McGregor was just 17 years old when he made his national team debut in 2002 at a World Cup event in Hungary. Originally from Cresent Head on NSW's mid north coast, Sam took up water polo at the age of 12 to play for nearby Kempsey, before joining the West Sydney Magpies at the age of 14. He moved fulltime to Sydney at the age of 16 to attend boarding school and further his water polo career. The following year he was offered an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship and moved to Canberra. Despite his many changes in location, Sam continued to play for Wests Magpies and won premierships in both the Under 18 and Under 20 divisions, receiving the AIS Educational Achievement award for his efforts. Sam formed part of the Australian Schoolboys side which won gold at the 2002 Tri Nations tournament with South Africa and New Zealand, before making his sensational Senior side debut later that year.

He undertook a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Sydney on completing his schooling, but left for Spain in 2003 to represent National League side Terassa for two seasons. In 2005 he returned to Australia and won the National League title with the Sydney Uni Lions, before returning to Spain, to join Barcelonetta, claiming the Spanish League title the following season. Sam also won a bronze medal at the 2003 World Student Games in Daegu, Korea, representing Sydney Uni and Australia, and was part of the Australian Athens Olympic side which finished 9th in 2004. When not in the pool Sam spends time with wife Erin and son Declan.

McGregor was a senior member of the Men's Water Polo Team, who improved upon their ninth place finish in Athens to stand at eighth overall in Beijing. The team did themselves proud against some of the heavyweights of the sport, with a thrilling one point loss to eventual gold medallists Hungary, who also won gold in Sydney and Beijing. Australian great Tom Hoad described the match as the greatest game Australia has ever played. The team needed a win against Montenegro to advance to the quarter-finals, and, though bravely holding the European champions to a draw, they narrowly missed out.
