Lachlan Milne

profilepic_milne Lachie Milne can vouch for the adage that dreams really do come true. He had been working towards an Olympic Games berth for almost a decade when he qualified for the 2004 Atehns Olympics.

Although he had been canoeing for many years in the K1 kayak event, Milne only took up the canoe kayak slalom (C2) in 2002, when he teamed up with Mark Bellofiore, an accounting student at UTS. Their rise up the rankings was dramatic when they became the highest placed Australian crew at every World Cup regatta during the season. Their fourth placing at the first C2 World Cup event of 2003 was the best ever Australian C2 result.

They backed that up with 10th at the second regatta, held in Spain and 19th at the 2003 World Championships in Germany, to finish the year at 10th on the overall world rankings.

Milne and Bellofiore maintained their 2003 form by finishing first at the 2004 Australian Olympic selection trials held as part of the Penrith International Slalom series, and followed that up with a 6th at the final or the World Cup, held recently in La Seu, Spain.

The pair then finished 12th in competition at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Milne won a Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship for 2004 to encourage his pursuits of strong academic results and canoeing at the highest level.

Having studied Medicine at Sydney University, Milne has now put his career as a doctor on hold as he focuses his attention on winning an Olympic medal at Beijing.

Milne and Bellofiore dominated the Olympic selection trials earlier this year to qualify for their second games together, and finished seventh at the 2007 test event at the Beijing course. The final test event for the duo before Beijing will be a World Cup meet in Europe in June.

Milne, with Mark Bellofiore, narrowly missed out on qualification for the Men's C-2 Slalom final. The pair finished seventh overall in the event, an improvement on their twelfth place in Athens. Milne has said he plans to retire after Beijing.
