As the coxswain of the Men's Australian Olympic Eight, Marty Rabjohns can head to Beijing confident of having the full support of the eight rowers with whom he will be striving for Olympic gold.
Unlike the other men in the boat, the coxswain is not selected solely by the Australian Olympic rowing selectors, but by the crew themselves.
A popular figure in rowing circles, it was no surprise when Sydney Uni Blue Rabjohns booked his seat on the plane to Beijing at the National Rowing titles in February.
A former head coach of the Sydney Uni Boat Club, Rabjohns was also coxswain of the NSW Kings Cup Eight which won the 2004 Cup title, as well as coxing the Australian Senior Coxed Pairs and the 2004 SUBC Intervarsity Eight.
He was first appointed coxswain of the Australian Eight in 2006, and as a well established member of the team is looking forward to the challenge of aiming for Olympic gold.
Rabjohns was the coxswain for the Men's Eight. After a rudder malfunction in early qualification, the crew had to qualify for the final through the repechage system. The extra races ultimately took their toll, with the team finishing sixth overall.

Marty, Thought I'd drop you a line after I was forwarded a couple of your email bulletins. Don’t have your email address and the Telstra service is too short for me, so lucky I found this. Having just read Bulletin 3, all I can say is that it's exactly how I remembered it from 16 years ago at Banyoles. The anticipation, the shock of the racing intensity, then the relief & the high at getting to this point. But the job isn't done. Re the final my memory is of being in complete control of everything, until we were given a break due to a small delay and I switched off. Bad mistake as I can hardly remember a thing afterwards apart from some very vivid snapshot memories. The lesson - stay in your zone with your eyes and ears open. It's all part of your rhythm while you get your job done. Just watched your rep on the internet and you guys look primed. I cant wait for the weekend and you guys will be a grand finale. A big weekend coming up at Mercs with 300+ expected each day just like every other rowing club. You've been very generous letting everyone know how things have panned out. Now it is your time. All the best, Chipper.
