Matt began rowing whilst at the Kings School in Sydney, and enjoyed an immensely successful junior career, winning a gold medal as part of the National Men's coxed four at the Junior World Championships in 2002. He made his first Australian senior team in 2005, as part of the Men's Four crew, which finished 9th at the World Championships that year in Japan.
Matt continued to rise through the ranks of Australian rowing in 2006 when he was selected as part of the prestigious Men's Eight Crew that won a gold medal at the Poznan World Cup and finished fourth at the World Championships that same year. Matt maintained his position in the Men's Eight in 2007, however the crew found the going more difficult at the subsequent world championships, finishing 8th overall.
Matt was selected in the 2008 Australian Men's four to compete in the final qualification regatta for Beijing in Poland, however was struck down by illness just prior to the crucial race. The crew, which included fellow Sydney University rower Francis Hegarty, secured their place at the 2008 Olympics in a hard-fought victory without Ryan, who will now have more motivation than most to taste victory in Beijing.
Ryan and his team-mates in the men's coxless fours almost pulled off a major upset, leading with 200m to go in the final before being overtaken by the World Champion British crew. The Australians, including Ryan and fellow Sydney University Sports scholarship holder Francis Hegarty, were the last four rowers to be selected in the Olympic squad, and won a courageous and remarkable silver medal.

Dear Mr.Matt Ryan: Congratulate you and your team. Can you remember the girl in the photo? [image error] It's me. My mother took it on the night of the day that you got the silver at the gate of the Olympic village. I think it's a nice photo because everyone was smiling very happily. I felt quite pleased to take a photo with the Olympic Games silver medal winners and with your medals. Thanks! It's pretty cool! I've been to Australia. The beautiful scenery and friendly people left me a good impression. Hope you can make progress in the future and get the world champion one. GOOD LUCK! (p.s. my English is poor, please don't mind). The girl from China, Cathy.

Hey Matty, Good to see you've made it to the Olympics. Great to know that you actually took my advice on board. I'm obviously the only reason you made it there :) When you get home, make sure you pick up some duty free so we can celebrate my birthday and your win. Can't believe I actually want Australia to win something haha. Anyway, take care, don't get sick again (maybe sorting out your personal hygiene might help), and feel free to thank me for everything at a later date. Much love and best wishes Scribble.
