Sarah Stewart
One of the most impressive talents the University of Sydney will be sending to Beijing, Sarah Stewart will be gunning for gold as a member of the Women's Wheelchair Basketball side at the 2008 Paralympics. After developing dystrophy Sarah took up wheelchair sport in 2001, making her first Australian wheelchair basketball side in 2003 and representing Australia at the Athens Paralympics, where the side took home the silver medal, matching the effort of their male contemporaries.
In the midst of Paralympic success, Sarah shone academically, receiving the Vice Chancellor's Award for Academic and Sporting Achievement from the University of Sydney in 2003. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of New South Wales, completing a BSC (Hons) in Philosophy and Cognitive Science and a BA in English. She is a current PhD Candidate at Sydney Uni, and a scholarship holder in the Sydney University Elite Athlete Program. The wheelchair basketball tournament in Beijing will take place at the Beijing National Indoor Stadium from September 7-16, 2008. Australia has been drawn in Group A alongside Germany, Brazil, the United Kingdom and their opponents in the Athens final four years ago, the United States. Sarah and her teammates will be looking to exact revenge and go one better by winning gold in Beijing.
Competing in the 2008 Summer Paralympics (6-17th September).
