Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness awarded the first sport scholarships in 1990 with funds provided by the University men's and women's sports bodies, sponsors, the University and other benefactors. In that year the Sports Union celebrated its Centenary and the Women's Sports Association celebrated 80 years. The scholarships were originally known as centenary scholarships and were awarded to two first year students for the term of their undergraduate degree.
Since this time Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness has increased its support of elite student-athletes beyond a financial means. The Elite Athlete Program provides support for all athletes on scholarship, and those athletes with recognised potential who are awarded a place in the Talented Athlete Program (TAP).
