96 students strong for EUGs

The University of Sydney has sent a total of 96 students to compete at the Eastern University Games held in Newcastle from 2-6 July.

Over 3,000 students across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory have come together to compete over four days in 17 sports.

Sports include Basketball, 3x3 Basketball, Badminton, Football, Futsal, Golf, Hockey, Cricket, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Oztag, Squash, Tennis, Tenpin Bowling, Touch Football, Ultimate Frisbee and Volleyball.

Sydney University entered the following teams:

  • Basketball - Men's & Women's
  • 3x3 Basketball - Men's & Women's
  • Futsal - Men's & Women's
  • Touch Football - Mixed Team
  • Tennis - Singles (Andrew Lleonart & Natalie Yeung)
  • Ultimate Frisbee - Mixed Team

The 3x3 Basketball Men's and Women's teams will be aiming for a repeat of last year's team's sucess, looking to qualify for the Australian 3x3 Basketball Uni Championship to be held later in August this year on the Gold Coast. The team's must place first or second at the EUGs to qualify for the Championships.

Going on to win the Australian 3x3 Basketball Uni Championship will see the team's then sent to the FISU World 3x3 University League held in Xiamen, China later this year.

Sydney Uni's Women's 3x3 team is in a strong position heading into the Games with Sydney Uni Sparks' Maddie O’Hehir and Charlie Evans on the roster. Sydney Uni's Ultimate Frisbee and Touch Football Mixed Teams are also looking strong heading into the Games.

This year will mark the last ever Eastern University Games as we shift into the new Australian University National Championships model for 2018.

Luckily, all Sydney Uni teams have qualified for AUGs in 2017, so EUGs placings are almost needless. Nonetheless, students are looking forward to competing at a high level and enjoying the week in Newcastle.
