This week Basketball NSW announced a number of award winners across the Waratah League men’s and women’s competitions, with Sydney Uni players collecting a number of accolades.

Member of the Sydney Uni Spiders State League team, Sam White was selected as the Men’s Division One Rookie of the Year. This is a brilliant achievement for the first year student from St Johns College. He showed the impact he has been having this season by leading his team into the semi finals after a tough win against the Queanbeyan Yowies on Saturday. In the 79-71 win, Sam scored 23 points off the bench while being well supported by Yann Fasbender and Nick Peter with 19 and 15 points respectively.

Advancing to finals weekend, the men will now face the Wagga Heat on Saturday the 1st of August at 3:30pm at Sutherland Basketball Stadium, with the grand final following the next day should they take the win.

Sydney Uni Basketball Club members Kate Cranney and Kate Hewett also collected awards for their fantastic seasons representing the Norths Bears in the Waratah ABA competition. Cranney used her height and athleticism throughout the year to tally the most blocks in the league, with 32, while Hewett shot with phenomenal accuracy from the field leading the league in shooting percentage at 58.9%, a remarkable effort for the young guard.

The ladies will also play in the Waratah League finals weekend with a game this Saturday the 1st of August at 3:00pm against the Sutherland Sharks.

Meanwhile Brydens Sydney Uni Flames stars Kate Seebohm and Darneka Rowe also dominated the competition collecting awards for Golden Hands of the league and top three point shooting percentage respectively. This is an especially great result for Rowe who has been out injured for some time. She seems to be making a strong comeback and has found some good form ahead of the fast approaching WNBL season.

Good luck to all past and present Sydney Uni players competing at the weekend!
