Bright start at nationals

 Sydney University Swimming Club members opened the Australian Short Course Championships in Brisbane on a bright note with Meagan Ramsay and the 4x100m men's freestyle team making the finals after strong swims on Day 1.
The University Club has 16 members at the championships, with Ramsay - the newest member - finishing 8th in the final of the 400m individual medley in 4:42.79, narrowly outside her personal best time (4:40.19) which she set in the mornings heats.
Both the A and B 4x100m men's freestyle teams made the final, where the A team of Gordon Willis, Stephen Parkes, Sam McConnell and Mathew Abood finished a creditable 5th in 3:19.06, with the B team of David Wise, Dylan Curtis, Tim Halliday and Carlos Stephenson close behind in 8th in 3.24.62.
In other events, Sam McConnell made the semi finals of 100m butterfly, while Kate Johnson and Stephen Parkes competed in the B finals of the 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle.
McConnell swam a personal best time of 53.66s in the heats to qualify in 13th position for the semi-finals where he swam 53.67s to finish 14th overall.
Parkes, who was the first member of the team to compete at the meet, swam a personal best time of 1:48.19 in the 200m butterfly heats to qualify for the B final, where he finished 15th overall in 1:48.77.
Johnson also swam a personal best time (2:11.51) in the B final of the 200m butterfly to finish in 10th overall.
