Rohan Browning tore up the track Saturday night running a 10.08 for the 100m at the Brisbane Track Classic.
The run was the fastest by an Australian in more than 12 years and makes Browning the equal third fastest Australian of all time. The time also qualifies Browning for the World Championships in Doha later in the year and lowers the SUAC club record by 7/100ths.
Incredibly for the athletics club Browning will join seven other SUAC athletes who are currently ranked number 1 in the nation. Ian Dewhurst, Nick Hough, Michelle Jenneke, Sarah Jane Clifton-Bligh, Paige Campbell, Nicola McDermott and Catriona Bisset all sit atop the current Australian ranking list with Browning the latest addition. Considering the National Championships begin in 7 days in Sydney these are exciting times.
In other events at the Queensland Track Classic Nick Hough got the win in the men’s 110 hurdles in a season’s best 13.64. Club Captain Michelle Jenneke also took home the gold medal with a win in the women’s sprint hurdles in a time of 13.21. Aiden Harvey was 2nd in the Shot put with a throw of 18.06 and Beth Croft was 6th in the 1500m.
In Sydney at SOPAC a large contingent of SUAC athletes also competed.
Neil Song (100), Lachlan Bird (400), Erin Blundell (1500), Gen Cowie (400), Bec Bennett (100) and Abbey Connor (400) all ran personal bests. Annie Rubie got the win in the 200, with Jess Stafford finishing 2nd at 400m to Commonwealth Games rep Bendere Oboya. Pleasingly Club Captain Jin Su Jung returned from injury and ran a strong 100m race after a long layoff.
Attention now turns to next week’s Australian Track and Field Championships held in Sydney where more than 50 SUAC athletes are expected to compete.
