Sydney University Cricket Club began the 2018-19 Sydney Premier Grade cricket competition with a clean sweep in all five grades against Manly-Warringah on Saturday.

And the Students collected a bonus point in First, Second and Fourth grades to take an early lead in the Club Championship.

First Grade cleaned up Manly-Warringah by 144 runs in their 50-over match at University Oval.

The hosts posted 7-277, with Ed Cowan (69), Ryan McElduff (63), Liam Robertson (50) and Damien Mortimer (38) the main contributors.

Batting at No.4, Cowan cracked seven boundaries and a six in his 57-ball stay, while McElduff hit four boundaries and a six in his 64-ball occupation.

The Students then earnt a bonus point by dismissing Manly-Warringah for 133 in 37 overs, thanks to a nine-over spell from young leg-spinner Devlin Malone who collected 4-35. Ben Joy (2-13) and Tim Ley (2-25) also contributed to Manly-Warringah’s fall.

Second Grade skittled Manly-Warringah for 97 off 27 overs before replying with 5-99 off 26-4 overs.

Ryan Danne (2-2), David Miller (2-15) and Dugald Holloway (2-27) were the main contributors with the cherry, while Ben Trevor-Jones (39 not out) and Alexander Shaw (39) led the run chase.

Steven Hobson provided the highlight of Sydney University’s collective afternoon with a sparkling 122 in Third Grade’s 43-run win at Camperdown Park.

He shared a 102-run opening partnership with Jack Hill (37) as the Students amassed 8-265 before dismissing Manly-Warringah for 213.

Newcomer Nihir Gandhi led the University bowling assault, taking 4-35 off his 10 overs, with Michael Robinson (2-38) and Charlie Cassell (2-45) providing solid contributions.

Fourth Grade collected  bonus point by posting 5-86 off 27.2 overs in reply to Manly-Warringah’s 81 at Graham Reserve, while Fifth Grade claimed a two-wicket win at St Paul’s College Oval after posting 8-272 off 49.3 overs in reply to Manly-Warringah’s 6-269 off 50 overs.
