One of Sydney University Cricket Club’s favourite sons, Ed Cowan, has returned to the campus to play for the blue and golds after a successful six-year stint with Tasmania.
Cowan came through the junior ranks at Sydney University to hold down a First XI opener’s spot for a number of seasons before debuting for NSW in 2005. But it was a move to Tasmania in 2009-10 that brought him higher honours.
Holding down a regular spot in the Tasmanian Sheffield Shield side, he put together some run-laden seasons to catch the eye of the Australian selectors.
Cowan played 18 Tests for Australia, notching 1001 runs, including a century. He went on to play 53 first-class matches for Tasmania, collecting 4085 runs at 44.40, with 13 centuries.
He’ll be a welcome addition to the Sydney University side this season with the loss of NSW opener Scott Henry and all-rounder Sean Abbott.
The Sydney grade cricket seasons starts this Saturday, with Sydney University hosting North Sydney at No.1 Oval in a 50-over match.
The following Saturday features another limited overs match, with Sydney University taking on Manly-Warringah at Manly Oval.
The first of the two-day matches for the 2015-16 season will be on October 10-17, with the Students up against Randwick-Petersham at No.1 Oval.
