Sydney University’s tense, five-run win over Mosman in their Round 7, two-match that ended at University Oval on Saturday, could have some significant consequences in the next two rounds.

The win lifted Sydney University to 5th on the First Grade ladder which is headed by Northern District on 38 points, with Sydney (36), Gordon (31), Bankstown (31), Sydney University (30) and Parramatta (28) making up the top six.

The win also helped lift Sydney University to 3rd on the Club Championship ladder which is also headed by Northern District on 742 points, with Sydney (706) and Sydney University (627) still in contention.

With the Students meeting second-placed Sydney at Drummoyne Oval this Saturday and ladder leaders Northern District at University Oval on January 7, wins in those two limited overs fixtures could set them up for a solid tilt at the 2016-17 title and the Club Championship.

Having set a target of 267 on the back of Damien Mortimer’s 115, Sydney University had Mosman on the ropes at 7-155 on Saturday before the visitor’s tail started to wag.

Opener Dannul Dassanayake was still at the crease and he found solid support in No.8 Kurt Neely (39) before he was trapped lbw to part-time trundler Ed Cowan for 107 with the score on 212.

Jake Turner (27) and Varum George (26 not out) kept the scoreboard ticking before Tim Ley was brought back into the attack to clean-up No.11 Sam Sykes (9) with five runs to spare.

Ley finished with 4-39 off 17 overs, with fellow quick Dugald Holloway (3-31) and Cowan (2-38) also contributing to the win.

The Students also won Second, Third and Fourth grades to help with Club Championship points.
