Mail Opens With a Ton

Sydney University’s prolific opener Greg Mail began the new season in sparkling form, with a knock of 138 in the University’s 121-run win in their limited overs match against Mosman at Allan Border Oval on Sunday.

The joint 2009-10 O’Reilly Medal winner, with St George fast bowler Trent Copeland, helped the University to reach 6-299 off their 50 overs after they had won the toss and batted.

Mark Cameron and Stuart Clark then reminded state and national selectors of their prowess, ripping through Mosman for 178 off 38.2 overs. Cameron finished with 5-18 off 8.1 overs and Clark 2-18 as the Students collected seven valuable points.

Mail also top-scored for the Students on Saturday, when Sydney University met Campbelltown-Camden in the opening day of a two-day match at Raby No.1 Oval.

Having won the toss and batted, Campbelltown-Camden were summarily dismissed for 117 on their home track, with James Phatanak (46) and Russell Gasgoigne (23) offering the only resistance as Josh Toyer (4-32, Kevin Desai (2-16) and Mail (2-21) shared the spoils.

Sydney University were 5-116 at stumps, with Mail (27), Mark Faraday (20), Scott Henry (19) and Kevin Desai (17) all making tantalising starts. The match  resumes next Saturday with the Students hoping for a wagging tail and a good first innings lead.

Sydney University will have the benefits of Mail’s all-round skills for the full season – he retired from first-class cricket last December after becoming the first person to score 1000 First Grade runs in a season three times.

Mail wasn’t the only century-maker for the Students at the weekend. Matthew Gregory cracked 150 and Matthew Morgan 100 not out as Sydney University Second amassed 6(dec)-434 in their two-day match against Campbelltown-Camden at Sydney University No.2 Oval.

The visitors were teetering at 2-19 at stumps.
