Sydney University openers Nick Larkin and Ed Cowan are in for a long day at the office next Saturday when they resume play at Joe McAleer Oval, Blacktown.

The pair survived three overs at the end of day one of the two-day match, after Blacktown were dismissed for 356 off 90.5 overs.

While there were no century makers in the hometown innings, Arron Lilley (77), Jake Fawcett (60), Dean Crawford (48) and Usman Butt (43) all made solid contributions.

Sydney University skipper Larkin employed eight bowlers to stem the run flow, with quick Tim Ley collecting 3-72 off 22 overs in the very hot conditions. Dugald Holloway chipped in with 3-44 off 8.5 overs, with Ben Joy and Thomas Rogers each picking up two wickets.

The Students need to earn first innings points to stay at the top of the Belvidere Cup ladder, with second-placed Gordon in a similar situation in their match against North Sydney.

North Sydney were 9-284 at stumps on day one of their clash with the Highlanders at Chatswood Oval.

Sydney University head the ladder, on percentages, from Gordon on 49 points, with Bankstown (44), Sydney (42), Parramatta (40) and Northern District (38) making up the top six.

Sydney University Seconds are poised to collect first innings points, with the possibility of outright points, against Blacktown at University Oval.

Jonathon Craig Dobson (4-33) and Lawrence Neil-Smith (2-7) helped to dismiss the visitors for 89 at headquarters, with Sydney University 2-87 at stumps.

Sydney University’s Thirds, Fourths and Fifths are all in winnable positions, while Ryan Danne’s 44 helped to guide the Students to a win in their Poidevin-Gray match against Eastern Suburbs at Sydney University Oval on Sunday.

One of the more intriguing Round 10 matches is the Metropolitan Cup two-day clash between Sydney University and Mosman at Balmoral Oval.

The Students won the toss and batted; a decision that didn’t seem wise when they were 5-96. That’s when Hugh Farrow entered the fray. His 108, with 14 boundaries, help the visitors to declare at 8-314, giving them nine overs against the hosts before stumps.

Russell Miles collected 2-1 off his two overs as Mosman finished the day at 3-12 and a long week of contemplation.
